What Is Red Yeast Rice?

Red Yeast Rice—also known as Red Rice Yeast in the United States and other English-speaking countries—is a bright, reddish-purple powder that comes from the fermentation of rice while being cultivated with Monascus purpureus Went, a strain of fungi. The powder has been commonly used as food spice in Asian cuisine for thousands of years. Nowadays, many foods are colored with Red Yeast Rice including: meat products, fish, poultry, cereals, jams, ketchup, chocolates and beverages. Red Yeast Rice pigments have been commonly used in the global food industry for hundreds of years. In addition to its common use as food spice, the ancient Chinese pharmacopoeia Ben Cao Gan Mu records the use of Red Yeast Rice to promote a healthy cardiovascular system.

In the 1980s, Japanese scientists discovered that Red Yeast Rice naturally inhibited the key enzyme HMG-CoA reductase responsible for producing cholesterol in the liver. Since then, dozens of studies have been conducted—in China, Germany, Japan, the United States, and several other countries—on the effects of Red Rice Yeast on hundreds of individuals. Scientific and clinical studies have shown a 25 to 40 percent drop in total cholesterol levels for those individuals taking Red Yeast Rice dietary supplements. Red Rice Yeast has also shown a noticeable effect in promoting healthy levels of HDL and triglyceride.

One study in China was instrumental in popularizing the effects of Red Yeast Rice on cholesterol. In the United States at least two clinical studies have been conducted on Red Yeast extract. The first study was conducted by David Heber, M.D., Ph.D., at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Before completing his study, Dr. Heber anticipated that the benefits seen in his patients are clearly “beyond what would be seen with diet and exercise alone.” The second study, conducted at multiple centers throughout the United States, was directed by James Rippe, M.D., an associate professor of medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston.

How Does Red Yeast Rice Help the Body's Cholesterol Control?

The proper balance of cholesterol is essential to human health. Cholesterol is a key component of cell membranes and an important substrate for the biosynthesis of essential hormones. Most of the body's supply of cholesterol, some estimates are 80 percent, is produced in the liver. This biosynthetic process is rigorously controlled by biochemical feedback mechanisms. The amount of cholesterol produced by the liver is controlled by the enzyme HMG-CoA (Hydroxymethyl-glutaryl CoA) reductase. When the liver senses that more cholesterol is needed, more of the enzyme is produced to increase cholesterol production. When the liver senses that there is enough cholesterol in your body, less of the enzyme is produced to decrease cholesterol production. This essential feedback mechanism helps to keep your body's cholesterol level in balance.

The effect of Red Rice Yeast is partially attributed to the presence of natural HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors in its composition. The HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors in Red Yeast Rice are important because they help the body maintain healthy levels of cholesterol by emulating the natural metabolism processes that take place within your body

Is Red Yeast Rice Safe to Consume?

For thousands of years as a food spice, Red Yeast Rice has an extraordinary record of being generally well tolerated. Like with any other dietary supplement, herb or prescription drug, you must always read the label on the bottle to follow the manufacturer's suggested use and directions, and to be aware of any product warnings.

Although Red Yeast Rice side effects are very rare, it is recommended to be ingested with food to minimize the possibility of any adverse reactions which may include: skin rash, stomach discomfort, diarrhea, flu-like symptoms and muscle pain or muscle weakness. If any of these Red Rice Yeast side effects are experienced, you must discontinue its use and consult with a qualified health care provider.

Dosage recommendations for Red Yeast Rice supplement: In the US, the recommended dosage for Red Rice Yeast supplement is 2,400 mg/day in four capsules. Never exceed this dosage without the express direction of a qualified health care provider. Once your cholesterol levels are within a healthy range, you should consider adjusting your daily dosage to between 1,200-1,800 mg/day by reducing your consumption to 2-3 600 mg capsules per day.

Important Note: If you decide to take a Red Yeast supplement to control your cholesterol for extended periods of time—or any other HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor that acts in the liver like statin prescription drugs—it is recommended that you supplement your diet with Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) since all HMG-CoA inhibitors also reduce the amount of CoQ10 naturally produced by the body. The reason being is that bothcholesterol and CoQ10have the same biosynthesis process.

What People Are Saying About High Quality (HiQ) Red Yeast Rice?

B. Cunningham, Mobile, AL. "My husband and I have been taking Red Yeast Rice for several months now. Both of our cholesterol levels came down. We are totally sold on Red Yeast Rice as a natural dietary supplement. Our doctor could not believe the results. He is now recommending your product to those patients who do not have high enough cholesterol to merit a prescription drug. We will never stop taking this great product. Thank you so much for offering it."

C. Mendoza, San Diego, CA. "I never write to anybody like this, so you know that something good has really happened in order for me to sit down and type this out. My husband had his cholesterol checked back in July. His total cholesterol was 241. His doctor wanted to put him on prescription drugs right away, but my husband convinced the doctor to wait a bit and see if diet and exercise could help. In the meantime, I did some online research and found LDLHDL.com. After reading about HiQ Red Yeast Rice and its supporting studies, I convinced my husband to give it a try. I ordered two bottles and he commenced to take it twice a day as directed on the bottle. He had his cholesterol rechecked in two months. He was quite skeptical and convinced that he would soon be back at the doctor's office, prescription in hand. Well, the results were excellent! We got the written report from his doctor, from 241 to 185! Needless to say, my husband was thrilled. I also recently had a lipid panel done, and it came back at total cholesterol of 201. Since my husband's great success with HiQ Red Yeast Rice, I have also started taking it. I'll look forward to seeing my own excellent results in a few months, time when I will have my cholesterol re-checked! Thank you for an excellent product and at an excellent price."

P. Stern, New York, NY. "As a health care provider, I was not much of a believer in the "Red Yeast Rice - way" of treatment. At the age of 33, I was not ready to succumb to a life of a statin prescription drug! Now, after two months of Red Yeast Rice use, my total cholesterol of 240 mg/dl is actually 147mg/dl. I decided to use a different lab, one which utilizes gel electrophoresis to ascertain the various components of cholesterol. This is the most accurate means of assessing cholesterol (that I am aware of). Can you imagine my surprise? I am now going back to the original lab to have my total cholesterol (as well as other factors) assessed. I shall keep all of you apprised of my findings."

R. Lynn, Madison, WI. "I just wanted to let you know that I am excited about Red Yeast Rice. The result of my recent lipid panel was as follows: Total cholesterol 183 down from 239, HDL 48, LDL 103, Triglyceride 158. My doctor is thrilled. When I told her about HiQ Red Yeast Rice, she wanted to know all the details so she would be able to advise other patients with moderate-high cholesterol. No pain, no noticeable side effects from HiQ Red Yeast Rice. I plan to keep using it. Thank you so much!"
